Workshop on Internet Communication for Development

We are now on the third day of the workshop, It is gradually becoming more and more interesting as days go by.

Today we created different blogs, and linked them to each other .Mine is called Awareness Blog. The site will cater for issues related to information search, processing and dissemination as well as some issues to do with environment and development.

Apparently these are two intertwined issues which are very crucial for human development. an informed person is likely to make rational and correct decisions on matters related to his own development, Similarly, a healthy environment breeds a health mind, which is central in human development.

The adage by Godwin Gondwe, that “Information is power,” is based on this background, and therefore the creation of this blog is a step forward toward the attainment of this goal.

Awareness

My name Sam Henry Kasulwa. I am an Assistant Lecturer at Tumaini Unversity - Dar Es Salaam College. I Teach in the department of Library and Information Studies. I also head the College's Information Resource Center (IRC) that is equipped with a limited number of Journals, Books and some old copies of the daily papers.

Apparently, the information available in the college IRC does not in any way suffice the information needs of the community members who now approach 5000. In view of the bottleneck, the use of electronic resources has become a number one priority.

Information users at the College IRC are therefore being introduced to the basc skills of surfing the World Wide Web in a bid to source the right type of information needed to develop them.

Students on the other hand are imparted with lifelong skills in information search to enable them access the right information needed to prepare them for the examinations.

You will note therefore that the need for specialised training in information search is very important at this stage.

This blog is keen to impart to you information literacy skills. There will be also be some minor discussions on ssues partaining to environment and development. Please welcome to paricipate in these.

Sam
